 
'Transitional II' 38" x 50" Oil & Mixed Media on canvas Artist Statement Michael Colpitts Medium: Oil & Mixed Media Painting I love to paint and create atmospheres with color. Getting the right color juxtaposed to another is such a rewarding challenge. The technique I use is to put gesso over wooden panels, then I use acrylic washes to outline the forms and shapes. The next step in this unfolding process is to apply transparent oil washes to build up the colors and to create a luminescent quality. I am fascinated by this flow and blending of colors. For texture, I use modeling paste, grog, sand, thick oil colors or a combination of these materials. I am presently inspired to create abstract landscapes and am interested in the balance between man made structure and the natural elements of earth, air, fire and water. Sometimes the expression is a subtle balance and other times there is a more urban edge depending on my mood. My intention is for the finished painting to have enough space to invite the viewer in. There's a quality of suggestion without definition which creates feelings and emotions and allows space for the viewer's own personal, unique interpretation. The biggest challenge for me as a painter is to get out of the way and let the painting happen, it's an incredible dance that brings me to the color palette!
